The Many Advantages of Students Cards

Defined Tag:

When young people register for college, they are issued students cards. More versatile than the old fashioned identification cards of decades past, these contemporary cards serve a variety of purposes.

Of course, the most basic function of cards is to serve as proof that the individual is registered with the college and university. The cards normally include a picture taken of the student at the time of registration, as well as their student number and any other vital information deemed important by the institution. In some instances, the students cards will be used for the entire four years. Other universities may issue new students on an annual basis.

In addition to basic identification, students cards also allow the individual to receive a number of on campus privileges. One of the more important privileges is access to the university media center. There, the student may select various books, tapes and other media that can be used as resources for reports and other research. Access to computers is often tracked by scanning the students cards. Books and other media may also be borrowed from the media center, by swiping the card through a tracking system, much the way a credit card is swiped to process a payment.

Cards also serve to admit the individual to various events around the campus, free of charge. This may include dances, plays, concerts or any other entertainment arranged by the university. This privilege ensures the student is able to find outlets that provide amusements in a controlled environment, which can be helpful to students who are far from home for the first time.

As an incentive, students cards also often allow the individual to obtain discounts from local merchants. Grocery stores, clothing shops and bookstores often have student discounts that can be received simply by producing the card at the time of purchase.

Students cards are multifaceted these days, and provide the student with access to a number of advantages. When considering a college or university, ask for details on the types of perks available to the student body.
